About Barberino Val d’Elsa
Barberino Val d'Elsa, in the heart of Chianti between Florence and Siena, is a small medieval town that dates back to the 1200s and is still surrounded by its original medieval walls. Here, gentle hills dotted with vineyards, olive groves and cypresses give way to a wilder, wooded and rocky landscape. The area is a haven for food lovers with many restaurants and wine cellars where only the freshest ingredients and finest local wines are served.

Barberino offers much to the traveller, with many small medieval boroughs on the hills around the main town. Each one is alive with history and legends.

Although they all stem from the same cultural and historic roots, each town is different, appearing as little "worlds" to be discovered. For example, Sant'Appiano can be traced back to Etruscan-Roman times, with the ruins of the Romanesque Church where the mortal remains of the saint who lived here in the 4th century are conserved, and whose name was given to the village that had previously been called Monteloro. Petrognano represents all that remains of the lost city of Semifonte which was razed in 1202 by Florence. Later, according to legend, Barberino was built with stones taken from Semifonte. Tignano dates back to the 10th century and is one of the few practically unchanged "walled" towns. Then there’s Vico with its noble palazzos, Linari, a pretty fortified borough of very old origins, and once the economic centre of Val d’Elsa, and Poneta, Pastine, Poppiano, Marcialla, Monsanto, Olena, Cortine, San Filippo, each containing treasures that provide the traveller with further interesting examples of history.
